Leadership

8(a) Strategies’ team of advisors is led by Tommy Benz. Tommy is an accomplished business development and project management professional with expertise in strategic planning for 8(a) small businesses in the federal contracting sector. 

As an experienced executive, Tommy has created and managed pipelines resulting in multi-million-dollar awards in civilian and defense agencies. While working for multiple 8(a) companies, Tommy has led each of their federal business development programs where he has secured millions of dollars of 8(a) sole source contracts, 8(a) competitive contracts, and other small business competitive contracts. Additionally, Tommy has extensive experience helping 8(a) companies plan their graduation strategies, and has advised on the appropriateness, strategy and planning of several SBA Mentor Protege Program applicants.

Tommy is an advisor and instructor at the Bowie State Government Contracting Center of Excellence, the Bowie Innovation Center 8(a) Accelerator, and the Veteran Institute of Procurement. He also serves as an advisor for the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship. Tommy holds the Project Manager Professional (PMP) certification, and served on the board of the Washington, D.C. chapter of the Project Management Institute while running their Mentor-Protégé program there for many years. Tommy has a passion for connecting people and companies together to come up with creative solutions to problems.
